Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world around them. Autism can look different from one person to another—some children may have strong language skills but struggle socially, while others may be nonverbal and rely on alternative ways to communicate.
At Empower Spectrum Solutions, we recognize that every child with autism is unique. That’s why we provide personalized, compassionate care that meets each child where they are.
Avoids eye contact and prefers to be alone.
Does not play "pretend" games by 18 months.
Speaks very little or struggles to express needs with words.
Engages in repeated actions like hand flapping, rocking, or spinning objects.
Does not respond to their name by 12 months.
Becomes upset when routines are changed or unexpected things happen.
Autism is described as a “spectrum” because it includes a wide range of abilities and challenges. Some individuals may need very little support, while others may benefit from more intensive services in daily life. Many people with autism have unique strengths—such as strong memory skills, focused interests, or visual thinking—that are just as important to recognize as their challenges.
At Empower Spectrum Solutions, we focus on the whole child, supporting growth while celebrating each child’s individuality.
There is no definitive explanation as to what causes autism, but research is ongoing. Most experts agree that genetics play a major role and may be responsible for up to 90% of autism cases. Scientists have identified at least 10 genes that may influence whether a child develops autism. However, autism is not caused by parenting styles or vaccines.
In addition to genetics, other risk factors may increase the likelihood of autism. These include maternal conditions like diabetes, the use of psychotropic medications during pregnancy, older parental age, premature birth, and lack of oxygen during delivery (hypoxia). Some research also points to prenatal viral infections as a potential non-genetic cause. Autism is complex, and both genetic and environmental factors likely play a part.
